Top 10 Common Plumbing Problems in Singapore Homes and How to Fix Them

Living in a humid, high-rainfall country like Singapore means your home’s plumbing system works overtime. From HDB flats to private condos, plumbing issues are inevitable. Here are the top 10 common problems and DIY solutions before calling a professional.

Clogged Bathroom Drains: Hair and soap scum are the main culprits. Remove the drain cover and use a zip-it tool or a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Let it sit for 15 minutes before flushing with hot water.

Leaky Faucets: A dripping tap wastes water and increases your utility bill. Most leaks are caused by worn-out rubber washers. Turn off the water supply, disassemble the handle, and replace the washer.

Running Toilet: If your toilet keeps running, check the flapper valve. Over time, it warps due to Singapore’s chlorine-treated water. Replace the flapper and adjust the float arm.

Low Water Pressure: Mineral buildup in aerators is common. Unscrew the faucet tip, clean the aerator with vinegar, and scrub away deposits. If the issue persists, you may need a plumber to check hidden pipe leaks.

Leaking Pipe Joints: Look under sinks for dampness. Tighten compression nuts with a wrench. For persistent leaks, apply plumber’s tape or call a handyman.

Water Heater Not Heating: Storage heaters in Singapore often fail due to sediment buildup. Try resetting the circuit breaker first. If not, the heating element may need replacement.

Overflowing Sump Pump: While rare in HDBs, landed properties with basements face this during heavy monsoon rains. Check the float switch and clear debris from the pump inlet.

Foul Smell from Drains: Dry traps or bacterial growth cause sewer odors. Pour one cup of bleach or a specialized drain cleaner down the pipe, then flush with hot water.

Noisy Pipes (Water Hammer): When you turn off a tap, banging noises indicate loose pipes or high water pressure. Install a water hammer arrester or reduce your mains pressure.

Broken Garbage Disposal: Many Singapore condos have disposers. If it hums but doesn’t grind, use the Allen wrench slot underneath to manually free stuck food.

When DIY fails, always engage a licensed Singapore plumber. Prompt repairs prevent mold growth and structural damage.
